Installations covered by the EU ETS are required to report their annual greenhouse gas emissions and surrender an equivalent number of emission allowances. These allowances are distributed via free allocation, primary market auctions through competitive bidding, or purchases on the secondary market. Revenue generated from primary auctions is then distributed to participating countries to support decarbonisation and the energy transition.
